Become a leader

Here am I. Send me.

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’”Isaiah 6:8

It’s never too soon

You don’t need a black belt to start serving

At Grand Master Han’s, leadership isn’t something you wait for. It starts the first time you help someone who is newer than you. Every black belt in our family started as someone’s white belt, and white belts are the most important people in any school.

“Anyone with one piece of useful knowledge can bless another with it. It’s never too soon to help others. If you are a first day white belt and you know where the bathroom is in your school, you have valuable information to share with the next new student who needs to go.”

How to start

Your first steps as a leader

  1. 1
    Talk to your instructor

Ask for teaching assignments, like warming up class or helping students who are struggling.

  2. 2
    Help before and after class

Some of the best teaching happens when no one asked you to. Stay a few minutes and help someone with a form or a kick.

  3. 3
    Teach while your instructor watches

As you grow more comfortable, ask to teach a class, or a portion of one, while your instructor watches, so they can critique you and offer guidance.

  4. 4
    Allow yourself to make mistakes

Don't worry about perfection or expect it. You are learning. The only way to learn to lead well is to lead poorly.

  5. 5
    Attend the Leadership Training Course

Learn how we warm up a class, teach every rank from White through Brown, and know when a student is ready to test.

  6. 6
Open a class of your own

Take that major step. Every school in our family began with someone willing to serve.

“Don’t ask your instructor to teach. Beg your instructor to teach.”
Grandmaster Man H. Han

It’s that important to your development as a person and as a leader.

Leadership grows with every belt

Every rank has a way to serve

Your responsibility to lead grows as you do. Here’s what serving looks like at each step of the journey.

White BeltThe beginning

Bring others along. Even in the beginning stages of your journey, you can be an encourager to those around you.

Yellow BeltYour first rank

Anyone in a white belt could benefit greatly from your knowledge. Remember, you have something they really want!

Green BeltLending a hand

Help warm up class and help new students get familiar with techniques and how we do things.

Blue BeltHalfway to black

Lead often in class and begin to reap the rewards of passing on what you know.

Red BeltThe highest white uniform

Lead by example at all times. At Red Belt you are officially high enough rank to take the Instructors Course, although exceptions are often made for lower ranks who want to take it. You must be 14 to take the course, but you don’t have to be 14 to help teach!

Brown Belt“High Society”

A leader now as much as a student, leading through service to others.

Black BeltAnd beyond

You didn’t earn that black belt to gather dust on a shelf. There is nothing more noble or useful you could do with those skills and knowledge than lift others up!

Red Stripe Black BeltPass it on

One day, if you teach enough people, one white belt will endure the journey to black belt. You will then have successfully blessed another as you were blessed, to reach such a level. On that day you will become a Red Stripe Qualified Black Belt. The rarest of breeds in our martial art, these are those black belts that truly leave their mark. Meet our Red Stripe Black Belts →

A blessing in disguise
“One of my greatest blessings was to blow out my knee only a few months into opening my first full time school. I had to allow my yellow and green belts to lead. Those yellow and green belts became passionate about teaching, and three years later we had 17 academies going in southern Missouri alone.”

The GMHMA way

What a GMHMA instructor looks like

Patient

Different students learn in different ways. We stay flexible and trust the process.

Encouraging

We notice the small improvements and recognize them early and often.

Grounded in the why

We teach not only what to do, but why we do it, so students choose discipline for themselves.

Never harsh

We never use aggression or force to “toughen” a student up. We earn trust and guide with love.

You won’t be on your own

Leadership Training Course

Also known as the Instructors Course

Our Leadership Training Course prepares you to lead. Learn how to warm up a class so it awakens body, mind and spirit, how to teach every rank from White through Brown Belt, how to know when a student is ready to test, and how to run a public demonstration.

Who can attend: Red Belts and above, age 14 and up. Exceptions are often made for lower ranks who want to take it, so ask your instructor.

Next course: Summer 2027
“Put in the work, help others whenever you can and finally take that major step to open a class of your own. You will make mistakes but you will learn from them, and you will never regret the impacts you make on the lives of others as you assist them in becoming all they can be!”
